''Amelia and the angel'' (Ken Russell)

'It got me into the BBC and launched me'

That is the quote by Ken Russell talking about his short film ''Amelia and the Angel'' which was a success at the time in 1957.

Ken Russell is director of the Oscar-winning ''Woman in Love'' (1969)

His first film, a 26 min short called ''Amelia and the Angel'' was made in 1957.

It follows the journey of a schoolgirl, Amelia, around London as she attempts to find an angel costume in time to appear in her school play.

Ken Russell was 30 at the time and he wanted to get into the film industry and he just though about this idea.

Filming took 2 weeks.

''Funding the film wasn't a difficulty-it cost peanut. I didn't have much money at the time, about £100, but that was enough to make the film.

How is the directors style shown?

This director mainly rely on the sound to create mood and atmosphere to the want he wants which he does really clearly by using different mood soundtracks. As he don't really use much of dialogue he really concentrates on the shots for the audience to understand easily wants going on and the way he wants the audience to feel.

What have you learnt about how these shorts were made?

I learnt a lot through this short film sequence as in my short film I'am not allowed to use dialogue therefore I can relate to this short. The main thing that I learnt through this sequence is the simplicity of the narrative; the narrative is really simple but it's filmed really well and this is what I intend to do have a simple narrative but execute it really well.

How have shorts captured the audience?

Firstly I think it captured by the main actress in the film the little girl looking for her wings attracted the audience. The other way it captured the audience were from the use of different soundtracks throughout the short film which were used effectively. The other thing could capture the audience is the narrative as the girl character meets new people throughout her journey looking for the wings.
